Chapter 7

Several days passed, Chandra becoming stronger. Hayden saw he’d created a very unique vampiress—strong yet gentle, beautiful all the time while having an extremely confident side. This one would not hold back, the independent side to her personality obvious unless it came to their love. Then she craved his dominance.

Hayden could not believe his good fortune. Finding Chandra had been the missing piece to the puzzle of his life. Feeling complete, he understood his parents’ relationship and now languished in his own. Thank you, ma petit.

Chandra gazed at him, his body tight against hers. The feel of her skin against his sent heat coursing through him. He reached for her breast and teased her nipple while feathering kisses along her forehead.

“Hayden...” she softly moaned.

Since Chandra had come into his life, rising had been wonderful. Knowing he had someone to share his eternal life with made his future prospects so much better—no more mothers looking to hook him up with their debutante daughters in a masked ploy to get some of the Beaumont fortune. With his wife at his side, he’d be able to finally enjoy life, both personally and professionally thereby allowing him to concentrate on more important things.

“I think it’s time for you to leave our bed and walk outside. You need to learn how to handle your heightened senses.”

“But I like it right where I am.”

“I know but you need to learn this in order to survive. Remember, Solange is out there somewhere and we—you, especially—must be prepared because she will use your naiveté against you.”

“If you insist,” she said, pouting as she walked her fingertips along his arm.

“Chandra, I’d never forgive myself if something happened to you because you didn’t know what to do or how to handle things. I’d let the sun take me instead of suffering that kind of pain.”

“Hayden, no...” she gasped.

“You are my life. We are each part of one entity. Should one die...”

“All right, I can’t argue with that,” she said, her bloodlust frustrated.

“Later, ma petit, I swear.”

Outside on the terraced lawn of the aging country estate, Hayden motioned for Chandra to sit on one of the lawn chairs.

“I want you to close your eyes,” he began. “Tell me what you hear.”

Chandra listened, her mind bombarded with the sounds of the night—bugs, small animals scurrying back to their dens, a barn owl in the rafters of the building sitting off to their right though a treeline divided them, a dog’s barking and a cat’s mewing. Overwhelmed, her head felt like it would split open in order to make room for everything laying siege to her.

Once she’d told him, he explained what she would have to do to alleviate the pressure and seek out only what she wanted to hear. Relaxing her body, she did what he’d told her and started to isolate certain sounds while trying to ignore the unwanted ones. Once she’d been able to separate them, the pain eased.

Next, he taught her how to control the volume of the sounds.
